FDA: Long-Term Use of Actos Increases Bladder Cancer Risk

FDA recently issued a drug safety communication warning patients and health professionals that use of pioglitazone (Actos—Takeda) for more than 1 year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. This information will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section of the drug label and to the patient Medication Guide for all drugs containing pioglitazone.

Patients taking the diabetes drug Actos for more than a year may have an increased risk of bladder cancer, according to an FDA interim review of an ongoing epidemiological study.

The warning comes just days after two European countries banned use of the drug. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has yet to release any guidance on use of Actos.
